Stays in Edmonton

Downtown has the most character. The Fairmont Hotel Macdonald, opened by the Grand Trunk Pacific Railway on 5 July 1915, sits on the bank above the North Saskatchewan River valley at the east end of the core, and the JW Marriott, opened in 2019, connects by pedway to Rogers Place, home of the Oilers. In winter, the downtown pedway network lets you move between buildings without stepping outside. Old Strathcona, south of the river around Whyte Avenue, is the area I would pick for bars and theatre; the Fringe Theatre Festival takes over its streets for eleven days in August (13 to 23 August in 2026), and rooms near Whyte Avenue are the first to go. The west end, on the roads around West Edmonton Mall, is a block of chain hotels with large parking lots: handy for the mall with children, dull for anything else, and far from downtown. The airport is not on the LRT: ETS Route 747 runs from Century Park, at the south end of the Capital Line, to the terminal, so a hotel near a Capital Line station spares you a long taxi ride.

Where you sleep in Edmonton depends on why you came, because the city spreads wide and its hotel clusters sit far apart. For an Oilers game or a concert at Rogers Place, stay downtown: the JW Marriott Edmonton ICE District is linked to the arena by pedway. For West Edmonton Mall and its World Waterpark, the west end is where most rooms are, and 12 of the 29 Edmonton hotels we list carry West in their name. For the Fringe in August, Old Strathcona is the base; for an early flight, a hotel by the airport, south of the city.
