Our take
This Residence Inn shares a building at 35 Shubie Drive with a Courtyard, opened together in 2019, and it has one thing no downtown Halifax hotel offers: a heated indoor pool with a waterslide of about 150 feet. Suites come with full kitchens and a separate living area, breakfast is a free buffet, and pets are accepted. Dartmouth Crossing's shops are about 11 minutes on foot and Halifax Stanfield airport roughly 18 minutes by car. Only 46 reviews so far, but they average 8.9. The catch is distance from the waterfront: I would book it for a family stay with a car, not for a weekend of walking Halifax's boardwalk.
- ✓Walk the 15 minutes or so to Shubie Park for an evening stroll along the Shubenacadie Canal and Lake Charles, the quickest green break from the retail park.
- ✓Stock the full kitchen at Dartmouth Crossing on the way in: the shopping district is about an 11-minute walk, so you can cook dinners and keep the free breakfast for mornings.
- ✓Use this side of the harbour for an early flight: Halifax Stanfield is about 18 minutes by car, far closer than from downtown Halifax.
- ✓Check the pet weight limit for your dog when you book, as Marriott's own pages give different maximums for this hotel.
Why we love it
- Spacious family rooms with kitchenettes
- Indoor saltwater swimming pool
- Pet-friendly accommodation
- Electric vehicle charging station
Why guests love itA 150-foot waterslide on an indoor pool is the reason families pick this hotel, and because it is indoors it works in January as well as July. The suites help too, with a full kitchen and a living area that separates children's bedtime from adults' evening. Breakfast is included, Shubie Park offers trails and a lake within walking distance, and Dartmouth Crossing has supermarkets and restaurants. What families give up is the city itself: the Halifax waterfront, the Citadel and the Discovery Centre need a car or the harbour ferry from downtown Dartmouth, not a stroll.
