About this stay

L'Ermitage occupies a Victorian house on rue Sainte-Ursule, a short street that runs between rue Saint-Jean and rue Saint-Louis inside the fortifications, within the UNESCO-listed historic district. It has only ten rooms in three categories, Simplicité, Classique and Supérieure, the last two sold for up to four people. Each has a full bathroom, air conditioning, Wi-Fi, a TV and a coffee maker. The Fontaine de Tourny, just outside Porte Saint-Louis, is about 400 m away, and the Château Frontenac a few minutes on foot. From the Gare du Palais, the Côte du Palais climbs to rue Saint-Jean: a taxi takes 5 to 10 minutes. Jean-Lesage airport is about 14 km away, around 25 minutes by car. There is no restaurant, pool or lounge.

Our take

L'Ermitage sells one thing, its address: rue Sainte-Ursule, inside the walls, with rue Saint-Jean's restaurants at one end and rue Saint-Louis at the other. Its 525 reviews average 7.0, and guest comments return to the same points: street noise, thin walls, no staff on site and uneven housekeeping, set against praise for the location. I would book it for travellers who spend their days out walking Old Quebec and only need a bed inside the walls. I would not book it for light sleepers, anyone who wants a staffed reception, since there is none on site, or anyone who wants a bar or a lift in a ten-room 19th-century house.

  • ✓Light sleeper? Pack earplugs: the most repeated complaint in reviews is noise from the street and between rooms.
  • ✓No reception on site: arrival instructions and keys arrive by email 24 hours before check-in, so book with an address you can read on the road and keep the hotel's number, 418 478-0280, at hand for a late train.
  • ✓Driving in winter? From 1 November to 15 April, street parking in the city is banned during snow-removal operations, signalled by orange flashing lights on the streets concerned, with hours that vary by borough; the hotel's own parking is limited and first come, first served.
  • ✓From the Gare du Palais with luggage, take a taxi up the Côte du Palais rather than walking the climb to rue Saint-Jean.

Why we love it

  • Inside the walls, between rue Saint-Jean and rue Saint-Louis
  • Rooms for up to four people
  • A few minutes on foot from the Château Frontenac
  • A small Victorian house rather than a large hotel
Why guests love it

L'Ermitage can take a family of four in its Classique and Supérieure rooms, out of only ten rooms in total, so they are the ones to secure first. Children old enough to walk will enjoy the location, since the ramparts, Porte Saint-Louis and the Château Frontenac are all a short walk away. Expect sloping streets around rue Sainte-Ursule and no lift mentioned in the descriptions, which matters with a stroller and suitcases. There is no pool, play area or restaurant, and reviews mention noise and no reception on site, so I would choose it for an active sightseeing trip rather than for a family that needs quiet evenings and someone on hand.
