Stays in Hamilton
Downtown is my base for a short stay without a car, a conference or a game. The Sheraton at 116 King Street West is attached to the Hamilton Convention Centre, and the bars of James Street North and West Harbour GO are within walking distance. In September, the Supercrawl festival takes over James Street North for a weekend. The trade-off is parking: downtown hotels charge for a garage, and the falls are a drive away. Up on the Mountain, the Upper James corridor runs south toward John C. Munro airport at Mount Hope; I would sleep there before an early flight, not for an evening on James North. West of downtown, the Admiral Inn faces Dundurn Castle, and Visitor's Inn on Main Street West is the pick for McMaster University, about 2.3 km away. Stoney Creek, east along the QEW, suits drivers heading to Niagara, but it is a long way from the downtown bars without a car. For the waterfalls, book parking before the room. In the autumn colour season, only visitors who reserved online can park at the Tew Falls and Dundas Peak lot on Harvest Road, in two-hour blocks; Webster Falls has its own lot on Fallsview Road and its own reservation with the Hamilton Conservation Authority. From the Tew lot it is five minutes on foot to the falls and about 25 more to Dundas Peak, so a car base on the Mountain or the west side saves you the downtown garage.
In Hamilton, sleep downtown if you arrive by train or come for an event, and pick a hotel with parking if you came for the waterfalls. The city counts more than 100 of them along the Niagara Escarpment, and the best known, Tew and Webster in Dundas, are a drive from the core. For Toronto, West Harbour GO on James Street North has had hourly trains all day on the Lakeshore West line since 2021, while the older Hamilton GO Centre on Hunter Street sits behind a single-track tunnel that limits its trains.
Hamilton in numbers

Why guests love itC Hotel by Carmen's offers families spacious, modern rooms in Hamilton, each with a 42-inch flat-screen TV, a Blu-ray player and free WiFi, useful for a film night with children. John C. Munro Hamilton International Airport is about 14 km away.
4.5Visitor's Inn
Downtown · 1066 reviewsIndoor pool, hot tub, and sauna a short drive from downtown Hamilton
Why guests love itVisitor's Inn sits a short drive from downtown Hamilton and McMaster University, and its strength for families is the wellness area. Children can spend an evening in the indoor pool while parents take turns in the hot tub or sauna, and gym access is free. The on-site restaurant avoids another car trip at dinner, and parking costs nothing. Rooms are non-smoking with a coffee maker and free WiFi. A guest score of 8.9 from 1,066 reviews is strong.
4.5The Laundry Rooms Augusta
Pet-Friendly · 565 reviewsAparthotel with fully equipped kitchens, on-site dining, and pet-friendly stays
Why guests love itAparthotel units with a fully equipped kitchen make this one of the easiest places in Hamilton for families who like to cook. Breakfasts, packed lunches and simple dinners can all happen in the unit, which keeps costs down on longer visits. Private check-in suits late arrivals with sleepy children. When nobody wants to cook, the on-site restaurant serves international dishes. The property is listed as family-friendly and pet-friendly, and the 8.9 rating suggests the units are kept in good shape.
4.5TownePlace Suites by Marriott Hamilton
Spa & Wellness · 193 reviewsComfortable suites with kitchenettes, an indoor pool, and wellness facilities
Why guests love itIn-room kitchenettes make the TownePlace Suites by Marriott Hamilton a practical choice for families staying several nights in this Ontario city. The saltwater indoor pool keeps young swimmers busy in any season, and soundproofed rooms help everyone sleep. Free WiFi and streaming services cover quiet evenings in. Guests rate the hotel 8.9 across 193 reviews.
4.4Holiday Inn Express Hamilton - Upper James by IHG
Romantic · 248 reviewsComfortable rooms near Hamilton Airport with easy access to city attractions
Why guests love itHoliday Inn Express Hamilton - Upper James by IHG is a simple, well-rated base for families flying from John C. Munro Hamilton International Airport, 4 km away. Rooms are air-conditioned with free WiFi and flat-screen TVs, enough for a quiet evening before an early departure. No pool or restaurant is listed, so I would treat it as a place to sleep rather than a place to spend the day. The 8.8 score from 248 reviews is strong.
4.3Residence & Conference Centre - Hamilton
Downtown · 555 reviewsSpacious suites with kitchenettes and campus amenities near Mohawk College
Why guests love itSpace is the selling point for families: two-bedroom suites with kitchenettes mean children can have their own room and meals can be made in. A games room and a movie lounge help on rainy evenings, and a shared kitchen is available as well. It sits next to Mohawk College on the Hamilton Mountain, not downtown, despite the tag, and there is no restaurant listed. The 8.5 rating from over 550 reviews shows good value for a two-star.
4.3Hampton Inn By Hilton Hamilton
Spa & Wellness · 1066 reviewsComfortable rooms, indoor pool, and pet-friendly stays near Hamilton
Why guests love itHampton Inn by Hilton Hamilton covers the basics families look for on a short stay. The indoor pool gives children something to look forward to after a day out, and the daily buffet breakfast means everyone eats before leaving. Rooms have air-conditioning, a refrigerator for snacks and milk, a TV and free WiFi. The minimarket helps with forgotten essentials, and pets are accepted. A score of 8.5 across 1,066 reviews shows steady, consistent comfort.
4.3Courtyard by Marriott Hamilton
Spa & Wellness · 235 reviewsFamily-friendly comfort with an indoor pool, hot tub, and sauna
Why guests love itCourtyard by Marriott Hamilton gives families family rooms with private bathrooms and free WiFi, plus an indoor swimming pool that children will head for first. Parents can use the hot tub, sauna and fitness centre, and there is a terrace and a garden. The modern restaurant serves American cuisine with various dietary options, which helps with allergies or picky eaters. With an 8.5 score from 235 reviews, it is a dependable family base in Hamilton.
4.3Sheraton Hamilton Hotel
Spa & Wellness · 466 reviewsA 19-storey tower on King Street West, linked indoors to TD Coliseum, the convention centre and Jackson Square
Why guests love itPeregrine falcons are the reason children remember this hotel. A pair nests on an 18th-floor ledge, eggs usually appear between late March and early April, and the Hamilton Community Peregrine Project streams the nest, so a spring stay comes with a live nature lesson above the street. The rest is practical: an indoor pool for the evening, an indoor link to the Jackson Square shops for lunch out of the cold, and arena shows within the same complex. What is missing is green space at the door, since the tower stands among offices and the mall. I would book it for a family weekend around a show or a game, but not for a trip built around hiking.
4.2Staybridge Suites Hamilton - Downtown by IHG
Downtown · 489 reviewsSpacious suites with full kitchens and a heated indoor pool downtown
Why guests love itStaybridge Suites Hamilton Downtown suits families on a longer stay in the city centre: spacious suites come with full kitchens, so meals can follow the children's routine. The hot and cold breakfast buffet covers mornings, the heated indoor pool fills an afternoon, and the social evening receptions give parents a relaxed end to the day. Pets are welcome. The Hamilton Convention Centre is close by. With an 8.3 rating across 489 reviews, I would book it for a week-long family stay.
4.2Homewood Suites by Hilton Hamilton
Spa & Wellness · 683 reviewsSpacious suites with kitchens, an indoor pool, and pet-friendly amenities
Why guests love itHomewood Suites by Hilton Hamilton gives every family a fully equipped kitchen and a sofa bed, so children can sleep apart and meals happen on your own schedule. The daily hot buffet breakfast takes care of mornings, and the indoor pool fills the evenings. Rooms have a 50-inch TV for movie nights, parents can use the 24-hour fitness centre, and pets are welcome. Electric car charging is on site. A guest score of 8.3 from 683 reviews is reassuring.
4.1Sandman Hotel Hamilton
Spa & Wellness · 892 reviewsComfortable rooms with a hot tub, sauna, and pet-friendly amenities
Why guests love itThe Sandman works well for families on a short Hamilton visit. Rooms have microwaves, which makes snacks and quick breakfasts easy, and the on-site restaurant takes care of dinner. The hot tub and sauna are a pleasant end to a day on the Niagara Escarpment trails or at the waterfalls the city is known for. There is no pool listed, so it suits families with older children more than toddlers who need a splash. Pets are welcome too.
4.1Four Points by Sheraton Hamilton - Stoney Creek
Spa & Wellness · 548 reviewsComfortable stays with an indoor pool and spa, near Hamilton's attractions
Why guests love itFour Points by Sheraton Hamilton Stoney Creek covers what a family usually needs on a stopover between Toronto and Niagara: an indoor pool for the children, spa and wellness facilities for the parents, and free Wi-Fi. The beach is a short drive away, as are several historic sites around Hamilton. Its 8.2 score from 548 reviews points to steady service. I would choose it for a pool-and-sightseeing weekend with a car.
3.9Comfort Inn Hamilton - Stoney Creek
Downtown · 449 reviewsNewly renovated, pet-friendly comfort in Hamilton's east end
Why guests love itI would choose the Comfort Inn Hamilton - Stoney Creek for a reliable, recently renovated base in Hamilton's east end. It is smoke-free and pet-friendly, and its 7.8 rating comes from about 450 reviews, a decent sample for a mid-range hotel. The description places it close to downtown, with restaurants and shops nearby, but it is a quiet address rather than a walkable one. I would pick it for a practical family or business stay.
3.9Admiral Inn Hamilton
Downtown · 228 reviewsBoutique hotel in downtown Hamilton with a restaurant and bar
Why guests love itAdmiral Inn Hamilton is a small boutique hotel in downtown Hamilton, and its rooms are the useful part for families: each has a refrigerator, a coffee maker and a seating area, so there is space to spread out and keep drinks and snacks cold. The restaurant and bar on site cover a simple dinner without searching for a table. I would see it as a practical, central base rather than a hotel with children's facilities, since it has no pool listed.
What to expect
- Downtown core: the Sheraton (116 King Street West, attached to the convention centre), Hampton Inn by Hilton (7 Queen Street North), Homewood Suites (40 Bay Street South), Staybridge Suites Hamilton - Downtown, and The Laundry Rooms Augusta, an aparthotel with in-suite laundry at 18 Augusta Street, near the Augusta Street bars.
- West end: the Admiral Inn at 149 Dundurn Street North faces Dundurn Castle and its park; Visitor's Inn at 649 Main Street West is the closest of the list to McMaster University, about 2.3 km away.
- The Mountain: the Courtyard (1224 Upper James) and TownePlace Suites (1195 Upper James) face each other on the airport road, with the Holiday Inn Express on Upper James, the Residence & Conference Centre on the Mohawk College campus at 245 Fennell Avenue West, and C Hotel by Carmen's at 1530 Stone Church Road East.
- East end: Sandman Hotel Hamilton at 560 Centennial Parkway North, near Confederation Beach Park, plus the Four Points and the Comfort Inn in Stoney Creek, all quick to the QEW toward Niagara.
- Tiger-Cats games: Hamilton Stadium, at 64 Melrose Avenue North (Tim Hortons Field until 2024), is east of downtown; the downtown hotels are the closest on this list.
Local tips
- Reserve Tew Falls and Webster Falls separately: they have different lots (Harvest Road and Fallsview Road) and separate online reservations with the Hamilton Conservation Authority in the autumn colour season.
- For Toronto by train, walk to West Harbour GO on James Street North rather than the Hamilton GO Centre on Hunter Street: West Harbour has hourly trains all day on the Lakeshore West line.
- Before an early flight from John C. Munro airport, sleep on Upper James: the Courtyard and TownePlace Suites sit on the road that leads south to Mount Hope.
