Adults-Only Hotels in Ottawa: Who Can Actually Stay

For a child-free stay in Ottawa, two hotels have a written rule: the Swiss Hotel, a 22-room inn on Daly Avenue in Sandy Hill, a short walk from the ByWard Market, and the Hard Rock Hotel & Casino Ottawa on Albion Road in the south end, where everyone on the property must be 19 or older. The third address on this page, SOHO Residences Lisgar in Centretown, only requires the person checking in to be 19; children can stay. That distinction matters in a capital where 20 of the 29 hotels we cover are set up for families. The three score an average of 8.8 out of 10 across 580 guest reviews. Below: which one suits a quiet weekend for two, which suits an evening of shows and tables, how to reach the Hard Rock without a car, and the 16+ spa across the river in Gatineau Park.

Ottawa is a government town on the Ottawa River, compact around Parliament Hill and the ByWard Market, with Gatineau and its spas across the bridges in Quebec. Weekday business travel and family trips to the national museums shape its hotels, which is why so few turn children away. Winters are long and cold, and Winterlude fills the city over the first three weekends of February.

Which adults-only stay fits your trip

I looked for a written rule that keeps children out, not a reputation for calm. Ottawa has two, and they work in opposite ways: a small inn where the quiet comes from the house itself, and a casino resort where the age limit of 19 applies at every door, from the hotel lobby to the theatre.

The Swiss Hotel at 89 Daly Avenue is where I would send a couple who want to walk everywhere. Its published policy is that children cannot be accommodated, so its 22 rooms stay quiet without anyone having to ask. The ByWard Market is under ten minutes on foot, the University of Ottawa about seven, Parliament Hill about fifteen. A few rooms have a fireplace and at least one has a whirlpool tub, so name the feature when you book. There is no bar or restaurant: dinner means the Market, and the lobby has a tea and coffee station.

Know its limits before you book. The Swiss Hotel fills a three-storey house with no elevator, a real drawback for heavy suitcases or bad knees. Rooms are small, though fitted with flat-screen TVs, Nespresso machines and rainfall showers, and there is a garden patio and a lounge with a fireplace and a piano. Recent reviews describe coffee in the lobby rather than a breakfast service, so plan mornings around the cafés of the ByWard Market. On-site parking is very limited and handed out first come, first served, so a couple arriving by car on a Saturday needs a backup plan. Check-in starts at 3 pm, check-out is at 11 am.

The Hard Rock Hotel & Casino Ottawa, opened in July 2025 as the chain's first hotel and casino in Canada, applies the strictest rule on this page: guests must be 19 or older to stay, and the same age applies to the casino, the restaurants and the 1,800-seat Hard Rock LIVE theatre. Guests who look younger may be asked for two pieces of ID. The six-storey hotel has 150 rooms, 22 of them suites, next to more than 1,500 slot machines, table games and eight bars and restaurants, Council Oak Steaks & Seafood and a Hard Rock Cafe among them.

Location is the trade-off. The Hard Rock stands at 4837 Albion Road, in Ottawa's semi-rural south end, about ten minutes by car from the airport and around half an hour from downtown, so it is the destination for a concert or an evening at the tables rather than a base for sightseeing. Without a car, ride O-Train Line 2 to Leitrim station and board the hotel's paid shuttle, which takes cards and tap only, never cash. Its timetable skips the 11 am, 5 pm and 10 pm hours and can change without notice, so check the next departure before you leave the train.

SOHO Residences Lisgar, at 300 Lisgar Street in Centretown, is the honest exception. Its rule is a minimum check-in age of 19, which stops a teenager from renting a unit alone, but children are welcome as guests, so the building is not child-free. What it gives adults is independence: apartments with full kitchens, contactless check-in through a lockbox and a virtual front desk, and a seasonal outdoor pool. It has the best guest score of the three, 9.1 from 306 reviews. Contact the property at least 48 hours before arrival, or the access instructions may not reach you in time.

If adults only really means a quiet day for two, the strongest answer is across the river. Nordik Spa-Nature, in the hills of Gatineau Park at Chelsea, Quebec, admits only guests aged 16 and over, apart from occasional family days. It has more than 25 thermal installations, most of them outdoors, silence is mandatory in every sauna and in the Kalla bath, and there is on-site parking. There is no shuttle from Ottawa, so without a car you need a taxi, a ride-hailing app or Communauto car-sharing. I would pair a day there with two nights at the Swiss Hotel, which keeps the whole weekend free of children.

A traveler's take

For a weekend as a couple I would book the Swiss Hotel, ask for a fireplace room and walk to dinner in the ByWard Market: it is the only address here that combines a no-children rule with a walkable location. It is not for anyone who struggles with stairs, wants a bar downstairs or needs a guaranteed parking spot. I would choose the Hard Rock only if the trip is built around a show at Hard Rock LIVE or the gaming floor, and I would not stay there to visit Parliament. A group that includes an 18-year-old cannot stay there at all. SOHO Lisgar suits adults who want a kitchen and their own space, as long as nobody expects a child-free building.

Why guests love it

Every unit at SOHO Residences Lisgar is an apartment with a fully equipped kitchen and a private bathroom, which gives families room to spread out and lets breakfasts and early dinners happen on their own schedule. The seasonal outdoor pool comes with city views and is the obvious reward after a day downtown, though it only opens in the warmer months. Guests rate it 9.1 across 306 reviews, and pets are welcome too.

Adults-only stay with a casino, spa, and easy airport access

Why guests love it

Families should look elsewhere: this is an adults-only property built around a casino floor, a bar and a spa, so children cannot stay. For parents planning a night away while the kids are with grandparents, it works well, with air-conditioned rooms, a garden and terrace for quieter moments, and free parking. It sits 2 km from the airport and roughly 17 km from Parliament Hill, so a car helps for sightseeing.

Adults-only retreat near Byward Market with hot tubs and fireplaces

Why guests love it

Families should know this up front: Swiss Hotel is an adults-only property, so children cannot stay here. For an Ottawa trip with kids, I would book elsewhere in the city and keep this address for a weekend as a couple. Its strengths are adult ones: rooms with original artwork and hardwood floors, a hot tub or fireplace in some of them, an outdoor patio, and the Byward Market less than ten minutes away on foot.

Local tips

  1. 1Name the room feature when you book the Swiss Hotel: only a few of its 22 rooms have a fireplace, and at least one has a whirlpool tub.
  2. 2Ask the Swiss Hotel for a lower floor if stairs are a problem: the three-storey house has no elevator, so your floor decides how many flights you carry your bags.
  3. 3Carry two pieces of ID to the Hard Rock if anyone in your group looks young: staff may ask for both, and nobody under 19 gets into the hotel, casino or restaurants.
  4. 4From the airport to the Hard Rock without a car, take O-Train Line 4 from the departures level to South Keys, change to Line 2 for Leitrim, then board the casino shuttle.
  5. 5Pay the Hard Rock shuttle by card or tap, since cash is refused, and check its timetable first: there are no departures in the 11 am, 5 pm or 10 pm hours.
  6. 6At SOHO Residences Lisgar, write to the property at least 48 hours before arrival: check-in is contactless through a lockbox, and the instructions arrive by email within 24 hours of arrival.
  7. 7At Nordik Spa-Nature, plan your ride back to Ottawa before you go in: there is no shuttle, but the front desk or boutique can call a taxi for you.
  8. 8Do not book the Hard Rock for a Parliament Hill weekend: it is around half an hour from downtown by car, and the shuttle only links it to Leitrim and Uplands stations.

Yes, two with a written rule. The Swiss Hotel on Daly Avenue in Sandy Hill states that children cannot be accommodated, and the Hard Rock Hotel & Casino Ottawa on Albion Road requires every guest to be 19 or older. SOHO Residences Lisgar sets a minimum check-in age of 19 but welcomes children, so it is not child-free. Ottawa has no adults-only all-inclusive resort.
